The Department of Biochemistry is dedicated to nurturing a passion for scientific exploration and innovation among our students. The Department of Biochemistry is well equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (RT-PCR and nucleic acid extractor). It offers a research programme leading to PhD degree in Biochemistry from Periyar University as per UGC regulations. The research programme provides a scientific basis for understanding the health consequences of the environment. Our research team focuses mainly on phytomedicine for the treatment of metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and reproductive disorders) and cancer, with research conducted in vitro, in silico and in vivo (animal models) at the molecular level (mRNA and protein). The department has been successful in attracting highly competitive research and extension projects from national funding organisations such as DST, ICMR and TNSCST etc. The Department of Biochemistry has received the sum of research funds Rs. 6980610/- from the funding organisations of Government of India like DST-SERB, ICMR, Indian Academy of Science and Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST). The two researchers received a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from ICMR, Government of India. The faculty members have published 72 research papers (h-index: 24), two books, five chapters and three patents.
