About the Department
Department of Chemistry in K.S. Rangasamy College of Arts and Science was established in 2010 with B.Sc Chemistry. The M.Sc Chemistry was started in 2012. Chemistry UG program compromises a broad range of subjects. It is convenient to divide the chemistry subjects into organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, industrial chemistry, polymer chemistry and spectroscopy. The Department of Chemistry concentrates on research work in.
Skilled chemists are in the need of current scenarios, required to work in production, process and research & development. The chemist develops life saving drug molecules to the society. They produce food products. They process petroleum. Overall qualified chemist are required to meet the industry need in testing, production, quality control, packing of consumer goods, cosmetics, food products, paper, paint, polymer, dyes, fruit processing, pharmaceutical, electroplating, metal finishing in automobile components etc.
A team of 8 faculty members works in the department with the spirit of research in the area of Phytochemisty, Organometalic Chemistry and nanochemistry
To produce competent Chemist, Researcher and Scientist through quality education.
The mission statement of the Chemistry Department is to train the UG and PG students by providing basic knowledge, good laboratory practices and research training through teaching, practicals and student project.

A candidate who has passed the Higher Secondary Examination of Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Board or an examination of some other board accepted by the syndicate as equivalent thereto with Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and any one of the following subjects namely, Botany, Zoology or Biology shall be eligible for admission into B.Sc., course in Chemistry.

Diploma in Water Analysis and Treatment: It deals with water quality parameter such as alkalinity, hardness, total solids and Silica content. Purification of water for drinking purpose, sterilization and disinfection of water. It also deals with water treatment like water softening, ion exchange process and demineralization of water. Student study about water analysis like minerals and salts.
There are four Skill Based Course such as Food Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Agricultural Chemistry added in UG programmes. Food Chemistry deals with food quality, flavor, nutritional values, contamination, sterilization and packing. Textile Chemistry deals with types of fibers, dying method and processing, etc. Polymer Chemistry deals with the types of polymers used in daily life, quality, and its applications in industry. Similarly, Agricultural Chemistry deals with soil quality, fertility, pesticides, environmental impact on soil and remediation of soil.
Two subjects such as Spectroscopy and Green Chemistry and nanochemistry are given as elective subjects. Spectroscopy deals with the various techniques which are routinely used in food analysis in in the industry. Green Chemistry and Nanochemistry taught about basic concepts of nanomaterials and its applications recently used in industry and medical field.
Establishment of the Department Library was initiated with the support of UGC-Minor Research Project. This library is very useful to PG Chemistry students especially. The there are 40 books are available at present in the Library.
Faculty members are actively involved in the research. The thrust research area of the faculty members are Natural Products Chemistry, Green Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Natural Products Chemistry deals with isolation of bioactive molecules from medicinal plants and its biological studies. Green Chemistry deals with Synthesis of nanomaterials, Characterization and its applications in various fields. Inorganic Chemistry includes, synthesis of organometallic compounds and its medicinal properties.
