About the Department
The Department of Physics was established in the year 2003 to promote quality education in the domain of Physical Science. It offers Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate courses with insight into theoretical and practical aspects. The curriculum is designed towards imparting quality education through which student can solve scientific challenges. Moreover, UG and PG laboratories are well equipped for developing the practical skills of students. The faculty members of the Department are actively involved in many advanced areas of research namely nanoscience, nonlinear dynamics, molecular quantum mechanics, computational physics, optics, crystal growth and biomaterials. The Department offers a series of guest lectures to nurture research knowledge among the students. The department has an association “Einstein’s Hub” for exploring the innovations of student’s co-curricular skills. It becomes an effective facilitator for transferring knowledge of high quality to the students.

Candidates seeking admission to the B.Sc., Physics shall be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. A candidate who has passed the B.Sc., degree examination in Branch III Physics Main or B.Sc., in Applied Physics or B.Sc., Physics – Vocational of Periyar University or an examination of some other university accepted by the syndicate as equivalent thereto shall be permitted for seeking admission to the M.Sc., Physics.

The department offers ASTROPHYSICS (with Sky Observation) as the diploma course for UG students which provides the fundamental knowledge in solar system and basic concepts of astronomical instruments.
The department provides four skill based course such as Instrumentation, Laser Physics, Spectro Physics and Materials and processing in four semesters to gain knowledge in different areas of physics for UG programme.
The elective course is being offered to enrich the students with a basic knowledge in recent area of research in Physics. The Students are given choice to select any one of the two elective courses Nano Science or Biomedical Instrumentation in the sixth semester for UG programme. Physics of Nanoscale, Nolinear dynamics, Modern Optics, Biomaterials, Crystal growth and thin film Physics, Molecular Quantum Mechanics were offered for PG students in second and third semester.
The department offers Energy Physics as a self study paper for UG students. This enables the students to provide a fundamental knowledge on various generation of energy, its utilization and conversion method.
